My bedroom is all redone and put back together, and today I finished the connecting sink/nook-type area.
I used the same shade as on the walls of the bedroom, but slightly darker. And the ceiling is a warm caramel with the door faux finished in the same color.
Peaceful, tranquil, romantic, and cottagey was what I was going for, and I am so happy with the color! The name is "nurture" and it is a Behr paint, my favorite to work with.
Behr is affordable and has fantastic coverage, usually one coat plus touch ups.
The ceiling was actually a pretty simple project, sepia and bronze glaze, swirled around with a one inch flat brush that I turned sideways for a thinner line for the vines.
Speaking of vines, I noticed a theme in my home. I do love flowers, but I seem to be drawn even more to the vines that flowers grow on. I know I am always scribbling little vines and swirls on collage pieces I make, and painting vines on furniture.
Do you ever have a theme that meanders through your home without you really thinking about it or planning it that way?
So, I'll show more photos of the bedroom redo later, right now I thought I'd take a tour of the twisting vines around my cottage.
This closet door has been color washed in bronze over ivory with bronze vines painted with glaze.
The ceiling of my dining room is bordered in hand painted acanthus looking vines.
And of course, I have the vintage wallpaper vining roses going up my stairs.
The stairs lead to Sugarwing's room, where I have a hand painted sign above her bed, with --what else-- on it? Vining roses.
By the linen closet upstairs, I've painted vining leaves on the wall to mimic wallpaper.
The same look is on the bench that I keep out in the breezeway.
The guest bath has a hand painted floor that green vines wind around.
And while the cement was still wet, I took a stick and drew in the concrete. You should have seen the look on the face of the contractor, he was horrified!
Ceramic roses vine around the bathtub.
And wooden roses vine themselves around this $4 garage sale mirror in my bedroom.
In my entry way, the steps have a mosaic of marbles and Venetian glass tiles that are in an organic, viney design.
In keeping with my vining theme, I wrapped some roses and ribbons around this garage sale watering can I had painted white.
It will be part of my June Garage Sailing Giveaway prize pack, and every comment for the month is entered to win.
Included will be this Victorian scrap ephemera, a crocheted doily, and some vintage gold trim.
Along with those goodies, is the baby dress I found last week at a sale, a white ceramic teapot/flower vase, a pretty yellow flowered plate, a white pottery urn (old) that I added flowers to, a Lucky Day button card (don't we all deserve a LUCKY DAY?), and filling the flowered plate is some bits of old jewelry.
If you enjoy mixed bags of free and vintage goods, you should also enter Beth's giveaway. She has a big pile of cool auction finds to share!
Your room has turned out gorgeous!! You can be sattified! Funny that you mention that you always seem to come back to that 'vine'shape. When I was a student (about 3 lives ago) I took a course experimental painting. We started with paper, pencils, tape, rope and a lot of other stuff. Each week one item was taken away, until the last week you only had your paper. When all artpieces of one person were put together, you could almost always see a personal blueprint. Most people are faithful to one shape. In my case it was an oval organic shape at that time. Now I see your pictures I'm inspired to look around here too! Great give away (pick me, pick me!!). Have a nice day!

Love the vines, I tend to use a lot of vines and black and white checks. I love the graphic punch they give. They may be old hat but I love them anyway.

Karla, the color you used for your bedroom is so pretty!!! and your vines all look delightful!!!

My Goodness your cottage is stunning, I too adore vines and yes somehow they creep into every drawing, stitchery and display I can think of, I even had them in my wedding bouquet and on the tables at the reception. Poor Mums plant looked a little worse for wear after I raided it but it was worth it and it did grow back as gorgeous as ever. I love your painted swirly vines, just perfect. Have a wonderful day, kiss noises Linda Lilly Cottage.

Oh I love the Behr paints too. You've inspired me (AGAIN), Perhaps, I could just paint my WALLS, since you can manage to paint the ceiling in between projects, lol! How's that article btw? I picture you up on a painter's ladder with your laptop! :D
Posted by: Kelley | June 17, 2008 at 08:34 PM
That ceiling is fabulous (although my neck aches just thinking about attempting that!) I love your vines in the concrete best of all - it takes spirit to do something that permanent!
Posted by: Barbara | June 17, 2008 at 08:36 PM
Karla, I'm the same way!! I love the simplicity of the vines...seems as though the green is a neutral, you know? And you're right about Behr paint, I've painted furniture for years and always loved it!! Have you ever painted with any Oops paint of Ralph Lauren from Home Depot? OMGoodness, I love the flat and then would embellish the furniture with a bit of decorative stuff and then clear coat with a non-yellowing matte clear coat....painting is hard work girl and your room is just beautiful!!! xxoo, Dawn

You have such a beautiful home! I love love love your bedroom. I would love to decorate my home the way that you have, but I haven't quite convinced my husband yet. He doesn't want to come home to anything too girly, so I have to be careful and every so often I slip something new in. He never notices and I have a a huge grin inside knowing that he doesn't ever realize that slowly his house is becoming girly! LOL!!!!

I love love love your home! I would love to decorate my home like yours but I am having trouble convincing my husband because he doesn't want to live in a "girly" house. So what I have been doing is every so often I add something new to the decor and wait to see if he notices. Of course he doesn't and he still hasn't realized that he is starting to live in a girly house. LOL

Love all the tendrils and vines! Thanks for sharing. It is so neat to walk around our home and find recurring themes and colors. That's when we really know we've created something that speaks of who we are. I really enjoy your creations!

Hi Karla,
I love the colour of your bedroom can't wait to see the rest of it. All the vines look amazing I really like the ones on your bedroom ceiling though. I would of loved to see the look on the contractors face.

ooooo many beautiful niches in your home - all so lovely and unique;) Soooooo fun to them!! Thank you for sharing!! That ceiling is absolutely gorgeous and the feel of the room is exactly what you were going for!!! Loved it!!! How wonderful that you've found you have a 'theme' - even though you did not know it until now - hehe!! My poor house has no theme...just lots of different ‘things’…I bet somewhere it is calling out for unity!! But alas, it may have to wait to the next owner…it will have to settle for ‘eclectic mess’ as some sort of banding title.
Again….I’m soooo taken with that gorgeous ceiling….wonder if my husband would let me paint the……. garage ceiling?? Perhaps this is where forgiveness is better to ask for than permission?? HHhmmm….. Debra

The bedroom has so much personality - I love it! Too many rooms are DULL....or copies of what someone else likes rather than a reflection of ourselves. I envy your artistic talent as well. Well done!

I am a firm believer that vines are "a good thing", and your house just has to be a great place to be.
I have an addiction to ivy. ;-)

Your room turned out beautiful as usual! I really do love the vines on the ceiling. I am usually a "green" girl, but I do love the blueish color you painted on your bedroom walls! Also, I love the vines and roses in the rest of your house, it's all a dream!
Posted by: gail | June 18, 2008 at 10:12 AM
Your bedroom ia beautiful, you talented girl! Also, I love the vines in the concrete. I too like to work with Behr paint, it's like painting with pudding.
I don't have that kind of theme in my home, but have come to realize I am crazy about mirrors and lighting. I just can't seem to stop buying either. If you saw the number of mirrors in my home you would think I am vane indeed!
Thanks for sharing! As always you are inspiring!

Lovely, Karla. Beautiful and restful. Ms. Twinkle looked like a toy stuffy sitting on that pretty bed! That's a huge amount of work, but it really paid off! Thanks also, for the tour of vines -- your space is always a lovely inspiration!

Your bedroom redo is beautiful! I think you hit the calm, luxurious theme right on the head! Your vines are wonderful; I especially loved the ones you did with a stick in the wet cement. We are pouring a slab soon and I think I will copy your idea. It's a graceful touch in a big, blocky pad of cement. Thanks for the inspiration!

What a beautiful room for you! I admit I am a bit too timid with the paint to do all the lovely details you have added. Maybe I will be inspired enough to give it a try. After all, a bit more paint would just cover it right up.
Thanks for the view of your lovely home. I so enjoy seeing all you do.

When you antiqued the doors, did you brush the glaze on and then wipe it off with a rag? It looks like a see brush strokes.

Your bedroom is STUNNING!!! It truly is a romantic retreat, and all the special touches you added make it even more wonderful! I don't even know where to start because I LOVE everything in there!! My favorite has to be the ceiling, though! WOW, how I wish I could do something like that on my ceiling. Probably won't happen since I live in an apartment, and I can't paint, lol. Two strikes against me there!!
To answer your question about an unexpected theme in our homes, I have recently noticed a love of all things bird and bird related.
I love the Garage Sailing Giveaway items, and you're very, very generous to be offering such a GREAT treasure trove of goodies!! Thank you!!!

Your home is truly a reflection of your love of life. I see romance reality come to life when I see your talents. I admire your tenacity to "finish" projects such as those. Your neck and back must ache after a marathon painting like your ceiling. Your efforts are well worth it, though. No one has a home like yours and I know your inspiration feeds off itself by living w/such creativity. You are truly talented.
I love that watering can you painted. Something so simple makes such an impact. Keep up your inspiration for us as it's so much fun to see. thanks, hilary

I miss my little yorkie, Blossom, she passed away last year of congestive heart failure. Her favorite thing to do when I was painting was lay down in the paint tray. I need to adopt a yorkie again I think.

It's just so great to cuddle all day in this charming bedroom, especially if you have a furry friend to accompany you! This room looks like it was inspired by fairy tales. The beauty of the ceiling with the vine design is absolutely admirable. For some reason, it reminds me of Sleeping Beauty. Hehe! I also like the artistic touch given by the mosaic tiles you used on the steps leading to your room. I love your bedroom!
